The second part of the program, focused on works of Italian musicians (primarily opera composers), was conceived not to offer something completely different from Beethoven’s Seventh which is, of course, different. It was meant to be a demonstration of the compositional skill of Italian musicians who, because they devoted themselves primarily to opera, have had their instrumental and symphonic abilities overlooked. Therefore, this collection of pieces we perform – Catalani, Puccini, Mascagni… – is not just repertoire to liven up the evening, but, rather, to educate the audience with pages taken out of the opera by demonstrating the great compositional excellence of Italian composers, who are usually remembered for: “Vincerò, vincerò, vincerò…”
