Pompei, Lucca, Ostuni. Riccardo Muti brings his Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, together with students from Italian Conservatories, to three cities that stand as symbols of the nation’s history and cultural heritage, for a project that places young musicians at its heart and affirms music as a shared cultural legacy.

On Saturday, July 18 at the Anfiteatro degli Scavi in Pompeii, Monday, July 20 in Piazza Napoleone in Lucca within the context of the Lucca Summer Festival, and Wednesday, July 22 at the Foro Boario in Ostuni, the project takes shape through a clear intention: to entrust the country’s great musical tradition to new generations and to place it within spaces that emblematically reflect Italy’s identity.

The musical programme fully reflects this vision. Riccardo Muti has chosen to bring outside the traditional theatre setting the great Italian symphonic–operatic repertoire. Giuseppe Verdi ideally opens and closes the concerts with the overtures from Nabucco and La forza del destino. At the centre are the Intermezzi from Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini, Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, alongside the Overture from Guglielmo Tell by Gioachino Rossini and Contemplazione by Alfredo Catalani, together with the suite from Il Gattopardo by Nino Rota.

“My invitation is addressed to the most beautiful Italy, so that its historic places may be filled and experienced through culture,” says Riccardo Muti. “I wanted the musicians of my Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra to work side by side with Conservatory students, without distinctions, because music is learned above all through sharing. Playing together means listening to one another, showing respect, and taking on a shared responsibility. We have chosen pages by composers who have given Italy a voice recognised throughout the world. Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Rota and Catalani are not merely great names in our musical history: they are part of a civilisation that has been able to express beauty, thought and depth. This music reminds us that Italy has played — and can continue to play — a fundamental role in shaping a shared cultural consciousness. Culture must not be reserved for a few; it belongs to everyone. Young people are the primary custodians of this heritage, and they have the task of preserving it with seriousness and passion. To believe in music today means to believe in the future of our country.”

With the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, founded in 2004, Riccardo Muti has developed over time a unique experience within the international musical landscape, combining rigorous study with deep attention to the human and educational value of music. The collaboration with Conservatory students further strengthens this vision, transforming orchestral work into a space for the direct transmission of knowledge and musical ethics.
