[…] when, at seven o’clock one morning, the phone rang and a firm, straightforward voice said: “It’s Karajan.”
“There’s a crazy guy on the line who wants to joke around,” I said to Cristina.
The voice asked: “Have you ever conducted Così fan tutte?”
I began to think it actually could be Karajan, and decided to humor him:
“No, maestro. But right now Karl Böhm is doing it in Salzburg, with great success. I wouldn’t want to die by my own baton. Can I think it over?”
“I don’t have time for that: it’s yes or no.”
“If it’s really you asking, I accept.”
