Ticket holders shouted and cast members wept on Friday night at La Scala opera house in Milan when the management announced that a strike by the orchestra would force cancellation of the performance of “La Traviata”. But Riccardo Muti, the company’s music director, volunteered to accompany the singers from the piano, saying, “I hope you’ll pardon me if I play a few wrong notes.” Repeated ovations indicated that he hit all the right ones. He is seen above with cast members during a party scene.
